Upper Dolpo Trekking

Upper Dolpo Trekking is the mystical land having remote and hidden valleys with wonderful mountain sight and prehistoric existence of traditional Tibetan culture.  It is one of the highest settled places on earth with spotted castle-like villages and monasteries nestling mountains of stark and moderate beauty. Dolpo is a ‘Bon Po’ Buddhist land where people practice shamanism which is the opposite implementation of original Buddhist Philosophy.

Upper Dolpo Trekking is the mystical land having remote and hidden valleys with wonderful mountain sight and the prehistoric existence of traditional Tibetan culture.  It is one of the highest settled places on earth with spotted castle-like villages and monasteries nestling mountains of stark and moderate beauty. Dolpo is a ‘Bon Po’ Buddhist land where people practice shamanism which is the opposite implementation of original Buddhist Philosophy. In the chant of Buddhist mantra “om ma ni pad me hum”, Bon Po Buddhist chant “om ma tri mu ye sa le du”, in Tibetan means ‘in clarity unite’.

Dolpo region is protected by Shey Phoksundo National park which is situated to the north of Dhaulagiri Himalaya Range in the border of Tibet. Well, Dolpo region has main two off beaten and popular touristic destination: Upper Dolpo and Lower Dolpo. This trekking trail is a reminiscent journey to rugged mountain hills, walled villages, Tibetan Monasteries with alpine valleys, engraved gorges, snowy passes and the similar kind of Tibetan land. In the book of ‘The Snow Leopard’, Peter Matheson explains his journey through the attractive land of Dolpo and the Oscar-nominated ‘Himalaya’ or ‘Caravan’ was also filmed here. It is one of the restricted areas of trekking destination. It’s requiring a special permit of USD 500 for first 1o days and additional USD 5o each day after ten days. The clients must be two people to get special trekking permit for Upper Dolpo.

We Begin our trekking from Jhupal after having 35 minutes scenic flight from Nepalgunj and the trail continue to Chhepka heading north along with Shey Phoksundo National Park. Exploring the vicinity of Phoksundo Lake and a Buddhist monastery in Ringmo, we continue our trekking with valleys and rocky hills of Shey Gompa. We cross many dense forests, rocky hills, and traditional villages of Namgung, saldang, sibu, Dho Tarap, and the trail goes back to Jhupal.
